GUIDE / STRAIGHT ANSWER

Why does ChatGPT show the wrong information about my business?

Find the specific incorrect fact and the source being used. Updating one page does not necessarily change an assistant’s answer everywhere.

One practical question. One straight answer.

The short answer

Incorrect details can come from stale public sources, inconsistent business information, a wrong citation or an answer generated without current web retrieval. Correct the authoritative public facts and any outdated sources you control. Keep a record of the answer and source; there is no guaranteed website edit that instantly rewrites all AI outputs.

What to check first

Use these checks to identify the problem before buying work or changing the setup.

  • ✓The exact incorrect statement
  • ✓Whether the answer used web search
  • ✓Any cited source and its date
  • ✓Where the correct fact is publicly documented
02

Capture the error without amplifying it

Save the date, question, provider, answer and cited page where available. Keep private customer information out of shared test logs. Distinguish a factual error about your business from an opinion or a recommendation you dislike.

03

Make one source clearly authoritative

State current contact details, services, prices or operating arrangements on the relevant public page. Check that old versions, documents and profiles do not contradict it. A price change hidden in an image while an old text price remains live creates avoidable ambiguity.

04

Correct what you can actually control

Update your own pages and profiles, and request correction of a genuine factual error on another site where appropriate. Do not manufacture positive mentions or post promotional instructions disguised as evidence. If the product provides a feedback mechanism, use it to report the specific issue.

05

Retest with the same limits recorded

Repeat a defined check after the public source changes. Note whether the provider retrieves the updated page. A corrected answer in one test is useful evidence of that test, not proof that every user or non-browsing model will now receive the same answer.

06

Apply this to your business

Tell Graeme what you sell, where customers are and where the journey breaks. The next step is a scoped conversation about ai search visibility and chatgpt discoverability, not an automatic package of unrelated services.

Common questions

Short, honest answers.

Can I edit ChatGPT’s memory of my company?

A website owner cannot directly rewrite a general model’s knowledge. Public corrections and product feedback can address available sources and observed errors without guaranteeing a model update.

Should I hide every old page?

Review the purpose first. Correct outdated facts, preserve useful history where it is clearly labelled, and handle replaced URLs properly rather than deleting content indiscriminately.
