GUIDE / STRAIGHT ANSWER
How do Google Ads keyword match types work?
Exact, phrase and broad match control how closely a search needs to relate to a keyword, but none should be treated as a substitute for reviewing the actual search terms.

The useful answer
Exact match is the narrowest, phrase reaches those queries plus more related searches, and broad reaches the widest set using additional signals. Modern matching is based on meaning as well as literal words. Choose the level of reach the account can measure and control.
What to check first
The right decision depends on a few commercial facts. Work through these before changing budget or buying another service.
- ✓Read the search terms report
- ✓Keep different services in coherent themes
- ✓Use negative keywords carefully
- ✓Judge qualified leads by match type
Exact does not mean identical wording
Google’s current matching considers the meaning and intent of searches. Exact match provides the tightest control of the three positive match types, but it can still match close variants and searches judged to share the same meaning.
Phrase and broad increase reach
Phrase match can reach more searches than exact. Broad can reach the most and may use signals beyond the keyword itself. Wider reach is not automatically better or worse; it increases the importance of conversion quality, search-term review and a bidding strategy suited to the evidence available.
- ✓Exact: tightest reach
- ✓Phrase: additional related searches
- ✓Broad: widest reach and more account signals
Keywords are not search terms
A keyword is the targeting instruction in the account. A search term is what the person actually typed. The search terms report is where an attractive campaign structure meets reality. Review it for profitable language, irrelevant intent and missing exclusions.
Choose from risk and evidence
A new campaign with little conversion data may need tighter control while it establishes what a suitable enquiry looks like. Broader matching can be tested deliberately when tracking and lead-quality feedback are reliable. Avoid changing everything at once.
What I would check in your account
If you share what the business sells, where customers are and what is not working, I can inspect the actual route from search to enquiry and tell you the first thing I would improve. If there is no sensible paid-search opportunity, I will say so.

Common questions
Short, honest answers.
Is exact match completely exact?+
No. It is the tightest positive match type, but Google can match close variants and searches with the same meaning or intent.
Is broad match always wasteful?+
No. It can work well with suitable goals and data, but it reaches more widely and therefore needs careful measurement and review.
Should every search term become a keyword?+
No. Build coherent themes and add terms when they improve control or relevance. Endless duplicate keywords can make the account harder to manage.
