GUIDE / STRAIGHT ANSWER
How can my business rank higher on Google Maps?
First separate a genuine visibility gap from the effect of the searcher’s location. One search from your own phone is not a local ranking report.
The short answer
Google identifies relevance, distance and prominence as the main local-ranking considerations. Improve the accuracy and relevance of the profile and connected website, build genuine evidence and measure useful enquiries. You cannot guarantee the top three positions or remove proximity as a factor.
What to check first
Use these checks to identify the problem before buying work or changing the setup.
- ✓Which service and location were searched
- ✓Where the searcher was located
- ✓Whether the listing fits the actual service
- ✓Whether appearances produce suitable enquiries
Write down the search conditions
Record the query, location, date and device. Keep branded searches separate from searches for a service. Appearing when someone types your exact name is not the same test as appearing for “air conditioning installer near me”. Repeating a few defined searches gives a more useful baseline than checking randomly.
Fix relevance before chasing a bigger radius
Check the category, listed services and the page linked from the profile. A visitor looking for repairs should see that service explained and evidenced. Adding a wider area does not make an unclear service more relevant or physically move the business.
Make reputation a real customer process
Ask genuine customers for honest reviews, reply constructively and keep real work visible. Do not buy reviews or promise an incentive. Third-party coverage and relevant links can support a real business reputation, but buying a directory bundle is not a guaranteed map-pack strategy.
Keep the outcome in view
A business can improve the quality of local enquiries without owning a uniform position across a whole city. Review calls, website visits and suitable quote requests alongside visibility. Do not compare a town-centre search with a distant postcode and call the difference a penalty.
Apply this to your business
Tell Graeme what you sell, where customers are and where the journey breaks. The next step is a scoped conversation about local seo and google maps support, not an automatic package of unrelated services.

Short, honest answers.
Can an agency guarantee map-pack position one?+
No. A claim of control over every search location should be treated cautiously.
Will buying Google Ads improve the unpaid Maps rank?+
Buying advertising is separate from earning unpaid local visibility. Evaluate each route on its own evidence.
