GUIDE / STRAIGHT ANSWER

Should I target competitor names in Google Ads?

Competitor searches can expose the business to people comparing options, but the intent, policy risk and economics are very different from ordinary service searches.

One practical question. One straight answer.

The useful answer

Treat competitor targeting as a controlled test, not a default. Keep it separate, use truthful adverts that do not imply affiliation and send visitors to a page that gives a clear reason to consider your business. Judge incremental qualified leads, not click-through rate alone.

What to check first

The right decision depends on a few commercial facts. Work through these before changing budget or buying another service.

  • Trademark and advert wording reviewed
  • A legitimate comparison reason exists
  • Campaign and budget kept separate
  • Landing page is truthful and useful
02

Understand the searcher

Someone searching a competitor may want its login, address, support, reviews, prices or a direct purchase. Only a portion may be open to an alternative. That makes relevance and lead quality uncertain even when the keyword looks commercially attractive.

03

Keyword use and ad-copy use are different

Google’s trademark policy says trademark terms are generally not restricted as keywords. Use in the advert itself can be restricted, especially for direct competitors or misleading copy. This is advertising-policy information, not legal advice; local trademark law still applies.

  • Do not imply affiliation
  • Do not use misleading comparisons
  • Check current policy and local law
  • Keep evidence for factual claims
04

Give the visitor a genuine alternative

A generic service page may not answer why the person should reconsider a known competitor. Use a truthful proposition—such as direct access, pricing model, specialism or contract terms—without attacking the other business or manufacturing a comparison.

05

Protect the main campaign

Use a separate campaign or tightly controlled segment so competitor costs cannot consume the budget for direct service searches. Report the search terms, qualified opportunities and final sales separately. Pause it if the economics stay weaker than the core campaign.

06

What I would check in your account

If you share what the business sells, where customers are and what is not working, I can inspect the actual route from search to enquiry and tell you the first thing I would improve. If there is no sensible paid-search opportunity, I will say so.

Common questions

Short, honest answers.

Is bidding on a competitor name allowed?

Google generally does not restrict trademarks as keywords, but trademark use in ad copy can be restricted and local law applies.

Should I name the competitor on the landing page?

Only when the comparison is accurate, lawful, useful and clearly independent. Avoid implying endorsement or affiliation.

Are competitor clicks normally cheap?

Not necessarily. Relevance can be weaker and other advertisers may bid aggressively. Use actual auction and conversion data rather than an assumption.
