GUIDE / STRAIGHT ANSWER
Should I bid on my own business name in Google Ads?
A brand campaign can protect message and measure branded demand, but it can also take credit for people who were already determined to find you.

The useful answer
Test brand bidding when competitors appear, the organic result is weak, promotions or locations need control, or branded searches have meaningful volume. Keep it separate from non-brand campaigns and report it separately so cheap brand conversions do not make prospecting look more successful than it is.
What to check first
The right decision depends on a few commercial facts. Work through these before changing budget or buying another service.
- ✓Competitors in the same auctions
- ✓Organic visibility for the brand
- ✓Brand and non-brand reported separately
- ✓Incremental value tested rather than assumed
What a brand campaign can control
It can present a current offer, direct visitors to a chosen page and occupy sponsored space when others are eligible to bid. It can also reveal the volume and cost of branded searches. Those are useful controls, not automatic proof that the campaign created new demand.
The attribution trap
People typing the exact business name may already know where they are going. Brand clicks are often cheaper and convert more readily than unfamiliar searches. Combining them with non-brand activity can lower the average cost per lead while hiding how much new demand was actually won.
- ✓Separate campaign
- ✓Separate budget
- ✓Separate conversion and cost reporting
- ✓Monitor organic and paid together
Use actual auction evidence
Auction insights can show other advertisers participating in the same eligible auctions once activity meets Google’s thresholds. Search results also vary by user, device and location, so repeatedly searching your own name is not a reliable competitor audit.
Run an incremental test where possible
Compare periods, locations or controlled campaign experiments carefully, accounting for seasonality and other changes. The question is not whether the brand campaign recorded conversions; it is whether it produced additional value worth the spend.
What I would check in your account
If you share what the business sells, where customers are and what is not working, I can inspect the actual route from search to enquiry and tell you the first thing I would improve. If there is no sensible paid-search opportunity, I will say so.

Common questions
Short, honest answers.
Can competitors bid on my business name?+
Google’s trademark policy says trademarks are generally not restricted as keywords, although using a competitor trademark in ad copy may be restricted after a complaint and local law still applies.
Will a brand campaign improve organic rankings?+
No. Google states that paid advertising and organic search results are independent systems.
Why are brand leads so cheap?+
Those searchers already know the business, so their intent and conversion rate often differ from people discovering it for the first time.
